Jamal Shahid

ISLAMABAD:
A parliamentary committee discussed the proposed new airport in Peshawar. According to the CAA chief, international consultants were being hired to conduct a study to decide a suitable location for the new airport.

“Unfortunately, Pakistan does not have expertise in building airports. All airports were inherited. An in-house study is also being conducted on the new airport to suggest the best and convenient location,” said Mr Suleiman.

The committee directed the CAA to share details of the in-house study being made for the selection of the location for the new international airport in Peshawar.

Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan during visit to Peshawar Airport on February 14 said that the airport is in the middle of the city. The air traffic and number of passengers are increasing at the airport.

Discussions have been held on the subject of constructing a new Peshawar Airport at a new location but it requires a lot of time, said the minister.

They should make a good road from Peshawar city to Islamabad airport and let Peshawar people use Islamabad airport for long haul routes and keep Peshawar operational for regional flights.

Why build a new airport for a city where Islamabad is only 2 hours away, that is a waste of resources.

Or is it good business as people who will sell land to the airport (CAA) will make a ton of money.

The same principle should also apply on Faisalabad airport, why operate it and not divert the people to LHE or MUX? :-$

Exactly. A lot of Faisalabad residents do come to Lahore for long haul flights, but more recently as FLYDubai and other airlines go to Faisalabad directly the locals feel there is not need to come to Lahore.

Faisalabad is quite far from Multan, so Lahore would be the obvious choice.

I give you an example of the US. I lived near Boston that city was the international hub for almost the entire New England area that meant people would travel as for hours to get to Logan Airport. Same principle applies in Pakistan.

Lahore near Sialkot and Faisalabad
Islamabad near Peshawar
Karachi for passengers from Sindh and probably a good air connection from Multan.

Multan being quite a distance can be developed as the fourth hub for PIA as it is in the center of the city and could serve South Punjab and Northern Sindh well.

Instead of building a new Peshawar airport it would be more feasible to build a high speed rail link from downtown Peshawar to the Islamabad Airport , this line could also offer in-town check in and other facilities for a hassle free transfer.

This indeed is a very progressive/modern proposal but people at the helm of affairs unfortunately do not have that progressive thinking. Otherwise instead of wasting millions on Peshawar Morh to new IIAP BRT, they could have considered rail network connecting RWP, Margalla and Golra stations with the airport bearing in mind that Fateh Jang is already on Kohat line off Golra Junction.

But Sharif dynasty was more obsessed with BRT because they have created their mafia for minting money out of BRT projects.
