Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Islamabad

Post by Abbas Ali »

March 10 - According to news channels, a helicopter after suffering technical problem has made an emergency landing near Lehtrar Road/Burma Bridge (Burma Pull)/Korang Nullah, in Islamabad. There were three/four people aboard the helicopter according to news sources and all of them are safe and well.

Helicopter type, registration/serial number and operator not known at the moment.

The helicopter had taken-off from Islamabad probably from Islamabad Airport.

There also is Islamabad Heliport for Emergency Relief Cell (ERC) helicopters adjacent to sports complex and then there's also Qasim Army Aviation Base, Dhamial Camp, in Rawalpindi. So, it's not exactly clear from where this helicopter took off.

It's a Pakistan Army Eurocopter AS-550U-3 Fennec which is based on the AS350 Ecureuil and AS355 Ecureuil 2 series helicopters, according to information on the web.

News channels were calling it Ecureuil helicopter. Technicians can be seen working to remove technical fault.

This is an AS350 Ecureuil, Fennec is the armed version for military. AS350 is the single engine and AS355 is the twin engined. These are called Astar and Twinstar respectively in the US.
A beautiful helicopter, very fast with high service ceiling.

^ Okay, I understand.

Actually, reporters of nearly all news channels called it 'Ecureuil' helicopter which means some official must have told media people that it's a helicopter model called 'Ecureuil' ?

So, is the official designation of this helicopter model in Pakistan Army 'Eurocopter AS-550U-3 Fennec' or 'AS350 Ecureuil' ?

On airliners.net, there's following photo of Pakistan Army helicopter (serial# 2806) added under designation 'Eurocopter AS-550U-3 Fennec' but in its description it's called 'AS-350B'.

Btw, according to info on Wikipedia, 'AS-550U-3 Fennec' is named after Fennec Fox which is a small nocturnal fox found in the Sahara of North Africa. And in designation 'AS350 Ecureuil', Ecureuil is French word for squirrel.

According to ARY News channel, a total of three people (including two pilots) were aboard the helicopter when it made safe emergency landing in an open field.

Here's ARY News channel report.

and here's APP news report:

Army helicopter makes emergency landing

ISLAMABAD, Mar 10 (APP):
A helicopter of Army Aviation made an emergency landing here on Lehtrar Road on Thursday, ISPR sources said. The three-seater “Ecureuil” of Army Aviation after taking off from Dhamyal Base Rawalpindi developed a technical fault forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. All the three personnel onboard including Pilot, Co-pilot and a crew member remained safe during the landing.

Further investigations are inprogress to ascertain the cause behind the incident.

“Though those on board remained unhurt but the helicopter suffered a partial damage at tail end and window on impact.

The ICT police officials including DIG Bin Yameen visited the site of the landing that was cordoned off by the Elite-force and assisted by traffic wardens.

This is an Ecureuil. As I said previously Fennec is an armed version. The helicopters Pak Army operates are normal commercial helicopters in military colours.

All Eurocopter (previously Aerospatiale) helicopters are named after animals. Lama, Puma, Gazzele, Dauphin, Cougar, Tiger etc etc.

^ Thank you, it cleared my confusion.

Btw, according to DAWN news report, the fault was removed after a five-hour repair work, and then the helicopter was flown back to its base.

Photos in today's (March 11) newspapers.

Initially a number of news channels in their 'Breaking News' were reporting that a helicopter has crashed in Islamabad and I think that's why fire brigade, ambulance, forensic science vehicles etc. also reached the site where they must have realized that it was a safe emergency landing.
