Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will operate 167 extra flights for Hajj operation with four aircrafts, including its two B777-200 and two B-767 leased aircrafts, to facilitate 52,711 pilgrims. The airline has rationalised that B-747 aircraft, having capacity of 503 passengers, was grounded following the completion of its flying hours and airline in order to make smooth Hajj operation preferred acquiring two aircrafts of 300 passengers' capacity on wet lease, instead of attaining single aircraft to meet the requirement, a spokesman for PIA, Aamir Memon, said.
Meanwhile, sources said that Nausherwan Adil, GM schedules & network planning at a meeting held at PIA head office last month disclosed that fleet deployment for Hajj operation-two units B-772 and two units B767 on wet leased was based on utilisation of nine units of B-777 during Hajj operation and in case of single B-777 was not made available, airline would face serious repercussions on its entire schedule.
He also gave an electronic presentation and briefed the house about the planning of Hajj 2015, which included pre and post Hajj schedule for Jeddah and Medina, required fleet for Hajj schedule, total number of Hujjaj to be carried by PIA, Hajj tariff, terms and conditions, slots status with GACA, etc. According to documents, PIA was going to operate a total of 167 extra flights 02 units of B777-200 and 02 units of leased aircrafts with a capacity of 300 passengers.
The national flag carrier will commence its pre-Hajj operation from August 23 to September 10, 2015 while its post-Hajj operation will be kicked off from October 3 to October 27, 2015. Some 31,157 passengers of government scheme will be entertained through 98 flights while some 21,554 passengers of private scheme will be accommodated in 69 flights. Out of total 167 flights, 45 flights will be operated to/from Medina while rest of 122 flights will entertain passengers to/from Jeddah.
The airline will use its B777-200 aircraft to lift Hujjaj from Karachi, Lahore, Sialkot, Multan and Peshawar, while passengers from Islamabad and other regions will travel in leased aircrafts, besides A320 feeder will also be used between Karachi, Sukkur and Rahimyar Khan. The documents further showed that PIA had proposed Rs 89,700 for government Hajj fares for south and Rs 98,700 for north, while Rs 1,09,700 and Rs 1,18,700 fares had been suggested for private Hajj group organisers for south and north regions, respectively. However, the PIA spokesman denied it, saying that Rs 65,000 and Rs 68,000 had been fixed as government Hajj fares.
