Turboprops are the best aircrafts on sectors that are less than 800nm. PIA should deploy these ATRs on those domestic sectors that where previously served by B737s. Using A320 on such short routes is not a smart move. PK's all domestic routes are less than 1000nm. So PIA should have more turboprops. While A320 should be used on other regional sectors. I pray that this tender should not go in vain as previous tenders have gone.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Aviation Shujaat Azeem today said that 15 dry leased aircraft will join PIA fleet in next few months.

The 15 aircraft most likely are:

5 x ATR 72-500
10 x Airbus A320 family aircraft.

These aircraft means cheap tickets to secondary routes with better frequency too. I would love to see direct flights from Lahore to Skardu and Gilgit, as many local tourist from Punjab travel to north in summers along with many locals of Gilgit-Baltistan working and studying in Punjab.
Its not that good a news as you think although I had hoped it would have been. PIA already has 102 cadet pilots sitting home for years. I doubt this will mean any new job creation any time soon.

According to statement of Chairman PIA given today:

* PIA will get five aircraft on dry lease for eight years. (I think they are five ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft)

* PIA will get ten dry leased aircraft between January and March of 2015. (I think they are ten Airbus A320 family aircraft)

UTair-Ukraine today returned ATR 72-500 (UR-UTL) to lessor. Aircraft ferried from Kiev, Ukraine, to Toulouse, France.

Probably PIA to become next operator of this aircraft?

Currently this ATR 72 is configured to carry 68 passengers in all-economy layout.

How many narrow bodies (A320s) does PIA really need???

Lets look at the possible international destinations that PIA use to serve or still does and can be served by the A320.

Dhaka
Mumbai
New Delhi
Kathmandu
Colombo
Dubai
Abu Dhabi
Sharjah
Muscat
Kuwait
Bahrain
Doha
Dhahran
Riaydh

On the east Dhaka and on the west Kuwait and on the south Colombo. Flights ranging between 3-4 hours.

The domestic trunk routes.

Karachi-Lahore-Karachi
Karachi-Islamabad-Karachi
Karachi-Peshawar-Karachi
Karachi-Sialkot-Karachi
Karachi-Faisalabad-Karachi

PIA should look at improving its economy product and reduce the 180 seat layout to 168 all economy like Lufthansa.
