so rather than backtrack, the aircraft will turn on taxiway joining old runway and then onwards to apron

Re: Islamabad Airport Runways Link Taxiway to be Constructed
Yellow dotted line I think is a possible area for linking the two runways.
The aircraft after landing on Runway 30 can exit the runway quickly to allow landing/takeoff by next aircraft from that runway.
Btw, what's weight bearing capacity of that old runway and what were runway numbers allocated to both sides of old runway?
Maybe the link taxiway can also be used by aircraft to reach Runway 12 after taxiing on old runway.

Re: Islamabad Airport Runways Link Taxiway to be Constructed
I suppose this is long overdue, but with the "new" airport being constructed is it really necessary? Even the ILS installation on runway 12 is pointless waste of money for the same reason.
Out of interest, does anyone know when the "old runway" was replaced with the new one. Is the "old" runway ever used now?

The old Rwy is 27-09. The scissors layout is typical of british airfield design during the War. The other layout was triangle like the one at Heathrow. If you see the British era airfileds in Pak, majority have this rwy layout.
If various organisations using/owning chaklala let go of their ego and bit of real estate, one can carve out a reasonable functional airport in the existing location.

The underconstruction link taxiway will be completed by the end of December according to PTV News.
Taxiway construction work shown by the news channel. The link taxiway will enable the aircraft to vacate runway quickly instead of backtracking runway. This will make runway available for other aircraft quickly. It will also help airlines in saving jet fuel and smoothen flights operation during rush hours.

Following photo and information shared by First Officer Aroosh Naqvi.
Work underway on a new taxiway that will connect the runway with the old runway and will somewhat reduce the runway occupancy time thereby alleviating the delays on arrival currently experienced as spacing of arriving aircraft must be adequate to allow landed aircraft to backtrack the entire runway.

Taxiway is 1,700 feet long and 75 feet wide
ISLAMABAD: A new taxiway is being built to save over Rs90 million to the aviation industry per year. The 1,700 feet long and 75 feet wide taxiway will help immediately clear the main runway as soon as a plane completes landing.
The addition of the strip will save 10 to 15 minutes time in every landing and take-off, Assistant Manager Works Abdul Shakoor Tahir told The Express Tribune. Presently, every aircraft takes a U-turn and uses the same runway for taxiing after making a landing on the main runway. Resultantly, every aircraft has to wait till the runway clears before takeoff or making a landing.
More than 100 routine commercial flights  domestic and international  operate from the Benazir Bhutto Airport every day.
The airport manager, Ayaz Jadoon, said that in addition to the routine commercial flights around 30 to 35 military aircraft use the airport daily.

Re: Islamabad Airport Runways Link Taxiway to be Constructed
This is such waste of resources and money. Priority should be to get the New Islamabad Airport ready by June 2015 at all cost. The money should be going to the new Airport. Pakistan needs to get off the list of countries having the worst International Airport which is the Benazir International Airport.

Re: Islamabad Airport Runways Link Taxiway to be Constructed
How many more decades does it take (or let's say, will it take?) for Pakistan to get it's link taxiway to be ready for use?
It's truly pathetic that it takes that long despite good weather conditions.

Taxiway D Construction Nearing Completion
According to PTV News report aired today, Benazir Bhutto International Air Port (BBIAP) - Islamabad runways link taxiway is named "Taxiway D" (Delta Taxiway). The taxiway construction work is nearing completion. This taxiway will help in saving jet fuel by allowing the aircraft to vacate runway quickly for next aircraft's landing or takeoff. Jet fuel expenditure reduced through usage of this new taxiway will recover the cost of its construction within four months.
